Fall into History

MTL will be hosting a six week series of programs covering, local, national and world history. All of these programs begin at 7 p.m. on their respective evenings and all will be held at the library.

Local History programs will include Norma Reheis speaking on the History Museum of Monroe County on Thursday, September 23rd, Nancy Grosse hosting "How to Hunt Treasures" on Thursday, September 30th and Quinta Scott presenting "Tour Down Bluff Road" on Tuesday, October 19th. The Monroe County Genealogy Society will have Kathy Nevin from the Family History Center speaking at their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 21st.

National History will be covered by Andrew Cooperman who will present three different segments from The Civil War DVD series by Ken Burns. These sessions will be held on September 21st, October 12th and October 26th. These Tuesday evenings will include a discussion session after the viewing.

Collectors will be at the library on the evening of October 7th to share their treasures from the wars of our Nation. If you would like to bring any of your treasures to show people that evening, call Sue Oerter at the library 939-6232 to let her know you are coming. Collectors will be present with their items for the evening so you may view things from their collections and ask questions.

The library's Page Turners Book Club has picked a book well suited to the national history theme. On Wednesday, October 20th join them for a discussion of Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels.

World History will be covered by Judi Tomlinson who will share information from her current trip to China.

To register for any of the Fall into History programs, contact MTL by phone at 618-939-6232, or by email at mtl@waterloolibrary.org. You may also pick up a reminder bookmark for all the Fall into History programs on your next visit to the library.

For more information on Fall into History, check the library's facebook page. These programs are part of the We the People Bookshelf on A More Perfect Union, a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities offered in cooperation with the American Library Association. MTL has received four grants from these organizations that have provided numerous books and programming for their patrons.

Storyline Online is a great way to get kids into reading. The Screen Actors Guild Foundation sponsors this on-line streaming video program featuring SAG members reading children's books aloud. Each book also includes accompanying activities and lesson ideas.
