What is IRIS?

IRIS or “Illinois Reliable Information Sources” is a free resource available to all residents of Illinois.  

Information in the IRIS databases includes full-text magazine and journal articles, e-books, images, newspapers and multimedia on a wide range of topics.

You have FREE access to 40+ databases that include these highlights:

  • Learning Express for career prep, skill building and standardized test prep
  • NoveList for intuitive book suggestions that inspire adult and young readers
  • NoveList K-8 for age-appropriate book recommendations, read-alikes, and Lexile and Accelerated Reader levels
  • Auto Repair Source for accurate, authoritative and up-to-date “do-it-yourself” service and repair information for thousands of domestic and imported cars, SUVs, vans and light trucks
  • Small Engine Repair Source for repair guides for small engines and routine maintenance, including lawn mowers, motorcycles, tractors, snowmobiles and more than 25 years of engine models.
  • Legal Information Source for thousands of legal forms by topic including bankruptcy, divorce, name changes, wills and estate planning.

Who can access IRIS?

As long as you are a resident of Illinois and have internet access, you can utilize IRIS for free!

If you travel outside of the state of Illinois, you can continue to access IRIS using your library card barcode number, which is located on your library card.  

Your library card must have been granted or purchased from a library located in Illinois.
